Quick Answer

A high misalignment rod end is a joint designed with an extended ball or integral spacers to allow for a much wider pivot angle—often up to 34 degrees. This is achieved by narrowing the contact area of the ball, which allows it to tilt further before the shank or bolt hits the edge of the housing, preventing mechanical "binding."

Standard vs. High Misalignment

A standard Heim joint typically hits its limit at 12° to 18°. In a long-travel suspension, this is nowhere near enough.

  • Integral Design: Some “High Misalignment” joints have the spacers built directly into the ball. This is the strongest method as it maximizes the surface area of the ball inside the race.
  • The Trade-off: When you increase the misalignment angle, you usually have to use a smaller bolt (e.g., a 3/4″ joint with a 5/8″ bolt hole). According to SAE J429, you must ensure that the smaller bolt can still handle the shear loads of your application.

Preventing binding failure

Binding happens when the joint hits its physical limit and the suspension keeps moving.

  1. The Lever Effect: A bound joint acts like a crowbar against the housing.
  2. The Solution: Using high misalignment hardware ensures the “pivot” stays a “pivot” throughout the entire travel of the shock, which is vital for prevent bracket fatigue in desert racing.
