Radial load: the primary force
Most of the work a rod end bearing does is radial—pushing and pulling along the length of the link.
- Testing: Ratings are determined by pulling the joint until the housing deforms or the shank snaps. A 3/4″ Chromoly joint usually hits a rating of 40,000 lbs based on SAE J1120 benchmarks.
- Safety Factor: I always recommend a safety factor of at least 3:1. If your link expects 5,000 lbs of force, use a joint rated for at least 15,000 lbs.
The danger of Axial loads
Axial load is the “weakest link” of any spherical joint.
- The Failure Point: Because the ball is held in by a swaged or crushed race, a side-load attempts to pop the ball through the opening.
- Engineering Margin: According to ISO 12240 data, you should never design a suspension where the primary load is axial. If your suspension links are “leaning” on the side of the joint, you are inviting a ball pull-out failure (Article 87).
