There's no single "best" material — it depends on what the vehicle is doing. Forged steel is the standard for a reason (cost, strength, availability), but the two real alternatives — chromoly and 7075-T6 aluminum — each solve a specific problem that stock steel doesn't.

The aluminum "memory" property is worth understanding specifically: a chromoly rod that takes a hard hit on a rock can bend and stay bent. A properly designed 7075-T6 rod is more likely to flex under that same impact and return close to true — which is a meaningfully different failure mode for anyone wheeling somewhere remote.

A cheap chromoly part with a sloppy joint can underperform a well-made forged-steel OEM-style replacement. Material spec is a real factor, but it's not the only one — don't buy on rod material alone without checking joint quality and brand reputation.
