How to Check, Remove, and Install a Tie Rod End Yourself

Before anything else: use jack stands, not just a jack. You'll be pushing and pulling on the front wheel while it's off the ground, and a jack alone isn't rated to hold that kind of side load safely. Get the vehicle properly supported first.

Tools you'll need

  • Jack + jack stands (not a jack alone)
  • Socket set / wrench set
  • Torque wrench
  • Tie rod separator (pickle fork or a dedicated puller tool)
  • Needle-nose pliers (for the cotter pin)
  • Penetrating oil / rust remover
  • Paint marker or tape (to mark thread position before disassembly)
  • Grease gun + grease, if your replacement part has a grease fitting

Step 1: Check it

Jack up the front of the vehicle so the wheel hangs free. Grip the tire at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions — the sides, not top-and-bottom (top/bottom tests the wheel bearing, a different part). Push and pull while watching the steering linkage.

Also check the rubber dust boot for cracks or leaking grease — a torn boot is itself a replacement trigger, even if the shake test doesn't show obvious play.

One diagnostic trap worth knowing about: play felt during this test can come from the outer tie rod end, the inner tie rod, or the wheel bearing. Don't assume it's the outer end just because that's what you can see — check each connection point separately before ordering parts.

Step 2: Remove it

  1. Mark the thread position or count the exposed threads before you touch anything. This is the step that keeps your front-end alignment close to where it started — mark with paint or tape, or count the turns as you unthread. Manufacturer service documentation (this step appears in Tesla's own factory procedure, not just community advice) treats this as a standard step, not an optional one.
  2. Loosen the jam nut.
  3. Remove the cotter pin, then the castle nut (some vehicles use a prevailing-torque/nylon locknut instead — check what's actually on your vehicle before assuming castle nut).
  4. Separate the tapered stud from the steering knuckle using a pickle fork or dedicated puller. Strike the knuckle itself, not the tie rod end, if you're using a hammer-and-punch method — you're trying to shock the taper loose, not damage the part you're removing anyway.
  5. Fully remove the old part, confirming the thread count you noted in step 1.

Step 3: Install the new one

  1. Thread the new part in to match the position/turn count you recorded.
  2. Insert into the steering knuckle, install the new nut.
  3. Torque it — but there's no single universal number. Community references commonly cite 35–50 ft-lbs; some sources give a slightly wider 35–55 ft-lbs range. Manufacturer service data tells a different story: Tesla's own factory manual spans roughly 76–133 ft-lbs (103–180 N·m) depending on the model. That's not sources disagreeing — it's real vehicle-to-vehicle variation. Check your vehicle's own service manual or torque spec sheet; don't use a number from this article as your target torque.
  4. If a castle nut's slots don't line up with the cotter pin hole at spec torque, keep tightening — never back it off to align them. Backing off drops clamping tension below what the joint needs to stay secure. This detail is consistent across every source that addressed it.
  5. Install a new cotter pin and bend it to secure. Cotter pins are single-use — don't reinstall an old one.
  6. If the part has a grease fitting, pump grease in until you see the boot edge just start to bulge or old grease gets pushed out — don't overfill to the point the boot splits. If the part came pre-greased and sealed (no fitting), leave it — don't drill one in.

After you're done: get an alignment

Every source that addressed this agreed on one point: counting threads gets you close to your old toe setting, not exact. Book an alignment after this job regardless of how careful you were with the thread marks.

If this is on an ATV or UTV

The procedure above holds for off-road machines too — the difference is environmental, not mechanical: expect more grit and water exposure to have worked on the dust boot, so inspect it a little more critically before you decide the part's still good.
