Crossover steering is an upgraded steering linkage layout used on lifted, solid-front-axle trucks and Jeeps — it reroutes the drag link so it runs across the front axle to a high-mount steering arm on the passenger-side knuckle, instead of the factory's short, front-to-back "push-pull" arrangement. It's an off-road/lifted-vehicle upgrade, not a factory-standard term — most daily-driven vehicles never need it.
Why factory steering geometry breaks down after a lift
Stock push-pull steering works fine at stock ride height. Lift the vehicle 4+ inches or run it hard off-road, and the geometry that worked at stock height starts fighting you. Crossover steering addresses three specific problems that show up:
- Bump steer — with a short factory drag link at a steep angle (which is what a lift creates), axle movement over bumps pulls on the drag link and steers the vehicle on its own, without any driver input. A crossover drag link runs long and nearly horizontal, so axle movement produces much less lateral pull.
- Lost turning radius during articulation — when a solid axle flexes hard (rock crawling, deep articulation), a stock push-pull drag link can get pulled tight enough that you lose the ability to turn in one direction entirely. Crossover geometry keeps a fuller turning range through the axle's full range of motion.
- Frame and steering box stress — push-pull steering loads the frame rail near the steering box with repeated front-to-back leverage, a known cause of frame cracking on older GM and Dodge trucks. Crossover steering converts that into side-to-side force, which the frame handles better.
Crossover steering vs. high-steer — don't confuse these
Both terms get used loosely in off-road forums, but they're not the same upgrade:

High-steer is effectively crossover steering with the tie rod also relocated for rock protection — if you're only hearing "crossover" but the linkage in question is mounted up by the springs, you're actually looking at a high-steer setup.
When you actually need this
This is a solution for a specific problem: a lifted, solid-front-axle vehicle whose factory steering geometry is fighting the new ride height or seeing serious off-road articulation. It's not something a stock or mildly-lifted daily driver needs to think about — factory geometry is designed to work at factory ride height.
