The simplest way to remember it: a drag link connects the steering box to the wheel linkage; a tie rod connects the two front wheels to each other. They're both steering-linkage rods with ball joints on the ends, but they move force in different directions through the system.

The wider swing range on drag link ends isn't arbitrary — a drag link has to handle more geometric movement as the axle articulates over bumps and flex, so it's built with more range to match.
How they connect, in order
On a typical solid-axle truck:
Steering wheel → steering box → pitman arm → drag link → steering knuckle → tie rod → opposite knuckle
Turn the wheel, and the steering box swings the pitman arm. The drag link pushes or pulls the first knuckle. The tie rod, running side to side, carries that motion to the other wheel so both track together.
Where they overlap in confusion
The exact layout varies by vehicle — on some trucks the drag link attaches directly to a knuckle, on others it attaches to the tie rod assembly itself, which is where a lot of the terminology confusion (Google searches for "what's the difference" being one of them) actually comes from. If you're not sure which part you're looking at on a specific vehicle, the direction of the rod is the tell: a rod running roughly front-to-back or diagonally from the steering box is the drag link; a rod running straight across between the two wheels is the tie rod.
Not every vehicle has a drag link at all — most modern rack-and-pinion cars don't use one; the steering rack pushes the tie rods directly.
