A trailing arm is a suspension link that connects a wheel or axle to the chassis, with its pivot point mounted ahead of the wheel. As the suspension moves, the wheel travels behind ("trails") that pivot along an arc. Its job is to hold the wheel in place front-to-back while still letting it move up and down over bumps.
Why It's Called "Trailing"
The name describes the geometry, not the material or shape. Because the pivot bushing sits at the front of the arm and the wheel hub sits at the back, the wheel end trails behind the pivot as the suspension compresses and extends — the wheel is always "dragging" behind its own mounting point. That's the entire naming logic; there's no separate mechanism hiding behind the term.

A trailing arm is a single rigid arm (or a pair of tubes/stampings acting as one unit) with a bushed pivot at the chassis end and a wheel hub or axle mount at the other end. The chassis-end bushing is the only place the arm connects to the vehicle body, so its condition — rubber vs. polyurethane vs. a spherical/rod-end joint — directly affects how precisely the wheel stays located under acceleration and braking loads, and how much play develops as the bushing ages.
Two Types: Pure Trailing Arm vs. Semi-Trailing Arm

Trailing Arm Is a Type of Control Arm — Not a Competing Part
"Control arm" is the umbrella term for any suspension link that constrains the wheel's motion in a given direction. A trailing arm is the subtype that constrains fore-aft (longitudinal) motion specifically. They're not two different parts you choose between — a trailing arm is a control arm, just one with a specific job. On Solid-Axle Vehicles, It Works Alongside a Panhard Bar
A trailing arm only locates the axle front-to-back — it does nothing to stop the axle from sliding side-to-side. On coil-sprung solid-axle vehicles, that's the Panhard bar's job.
