What Is a Control Arm on a Car?

A control arm — also called an A-arm or wishbone — is a hinged link in a car's suspension that connects the frame or subframe to the wheel assembly. One end pivots on a rubber bushing bolted to the frame; the other end connects to the steering knuckle through a ball joint. Together, that lets the wheel travel up and down over bumps while staying locked in its correct position side-to-side.

The Two Joints That Actually Do the Work

Why Some Cars Only Have a Lower Arm

The strut itself (spring + shock combined into one unit) does the job an upper arm would do on other suspension designs, pivoting at its own top mount. Only a double-wishbone suspension uses a matched pair of arms, upper and lower, at each wheel.
