What Does a Bent Tie Rod Look Like — And Can You Straighten It or Must You Replace It?

A bent tie rod is easy to spot once you know what to look for: a visible bow or kink in the rod itself, a torn or crushed dust boot at the joint, an off-center steering wheel, and a front wheel that sits noticeably toed-in or toed-out compared to the other side.   • Fast, uneven tread wear starting immediately after an impact event — this overlaps with wear symptoms, but the timing (suddenly, right after hitting something) is what points to impact rather than age.

One thing worth knowing: a bend doesn't always look dramatic. A rod can be bent enough to compromise it structurally without an obvious visual kink — if you've hit something hard and the steering feels even slightly different afterward, a straightedge check or a shop inspection is worth it even when nothing looks obviously wrong.

Why You Can't Just Straighten It Back

Older Jeep TJ/XJ platforms are known for a thin, bendable steering-adjuster tube that's an easy point of failure on rocky trails. When that happens miles from pavement, some drivers use a trailside method to get the vehicle mobile again: two sets of locking pliers to hold the rod, hooked to a winch, pulling the bend out enough to steer the vehicle off the trail.

This is explicitly described by the source demonstrating it as dangerous and a last resort — not something to attempt without a clear safe zone away from the winch line, and not a fix you drive home on and forget about.
