Tri-Flow and a pure dry PTFE spray aren’t the same category of product, even though they’re often reached for interchangeably — and which one actually solves a squeak without turning into a dirt magnet depends on where the noise is coming from and how dusty the environment is.


Two Different Products, Not Two Brands of the Same Thing
Tri-Flow is a light penetrating oil with PTFE suspended in it. It penetrates extremely well into tight pivots, hinge pins, cables, and bearings — exactly the places a squeak often comes from. Its tradeoff is that it leaves behind an actual oil film, and that film can attract dust over time, especially outdoors or in a dusty environment.
A pure dry PTFE spray goes on wet in a solvent carrier, but the solvent evaporates and leaves behind a genuinely dry, low-friction PTFE film — no oil residue sitting on the surface to collect dust. It penetrates reasonably well, though not quite as deeply into a tight, hidden pivot as a true penetrating oil.
Which One for Your Squeak
- Reach for Tri-Flow when the squeak is coming from a tight pivot, bearing, hinge pin, or cable — somewhere the lubricant needs to creep into a hidden gap — and especially if the part sees occasional moisture.
- Reach for dry PTFE spray when the noise is from a sliding contact surface in a dusty, sandy, or grit-prone environment, where you want the cleanest possible result and don’t need deep penetration into a hidden cavity.
Application Technique That Actually Prevents Grit Buildup
The product choice matters less than how it’s applied — excess lubricant left on the surface is what actually traps grit, regardless of which product you used.
- Clean first. Remove old oily residue and existing dirt before adding anything new — lubricating over grime just seals it in.
- Use very little. A single drop of Tri-Flow is usually enough for a pivot point; for PTFE spray, a light mist beats soaking the part.
- Wipe away the excess. Whatever’s left sitting on the surface after application is exactly what collects grit later — don’t skip this step.
- Cycle the part. Move it through its range of motion a few times so the lubricant actually reaches the contact surfaces instead of sitting on top.
