What Pulls the Range Down
- Potholes and rough roads — every hard impact stresses the bushing and shocks the ball joint at once.
- Road salt and coastal/humid air — accelerates corrosion on the metal arm, mounting hardware, and the bushing's metal sleeve; also degrades rubber faster.
- Off-road use and lifted suspension — changes the control arm's working angle, loading the bushing and ball joint outside the range the factory geometry assumed.
- Towing and heavy loads — more weight through the suspension on every mile.
- Low-quality replacement parts — a poorly bonded rubber-to-metal bushing can separate at a fraction of the expected mileage.
- Heat — sustained high underbody/ambient temperatures accelerate rubber hardening independent of mileage.

How Urgent Is It, Once It's Worn?

A Cracked Bushing Isn't Automatically a Failed Bushing
It's worth separating two things that get conflated: superficial surface cracking on old rubber, and a bushing that's actually torn through or separated from its sleeve. The first is closer to cosmetic aging and, on its own, isn't a reason to replace anything early. The second is a real functional failure — the bushing is no longer doing its job of controlling the arm's movement.
