Why This Matters Before You Book an Alignment

A worn tie rod end doesn’t just feel loose — it can actually let the toe setting shift as the wheel moves through its range of motion. An alignment performed with a worn rod end still in place won’t hold, because the underlying hardware is letting the geometry drift on its own. Fix the worn component first; the alignment comes after, not instead of.

A Driveway Check You Can Do Yourself

  1. With the front of the vehicle safely lifted and supported, grab a front tire at the 3 and 9 o’clock positions.
  2. Rock it firmly left and right while someone watches the tie rod ends.
  3. Any distinct clunk or visible movement at the joint is worth investigating further.
  4. Separately, have someone gently move the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the linkage — you’re looking for the steering wheel moving before the linkage actually responds, which is play somewhere in the system.

One important caveat: don’t condemn a joint just because the rod itself can rotate or twist — that’s how it’s designed to work. What you’re actually looking for is excessive looseness at the ball-and-socket connection itself or at its mounting point, not normal articulation.

The Diagnostic Order That Actually Works

  1. Check tire pressure and tire condition first — the cheapest things to rule out.
  2. Inspect every steering and suspension joint in the chain.
  3. Check wheel bearings.
  4. Get an alignment last, not first.

If a tie rod end (or any other steering joint) turns out to be loose or worn, fix it before the alignment appointment — otherwise the alignment numbers won’t hold, and you’ll be paying for the same service twice. Replacing a tie rod end normally requires a fresh alignment afterward anyway, since the replacement itself changes the toe setting.
