Two details from tie rod replacement that get glossed over in general how-to guides, but matter enough to deserve their own explanation: why counting threads actually works, and why there's no single torque number you can just look up and trust.
Why counting threads matters
The outer tie rod end threads onto the inner tie rod, and how many turns it's threaded on determines the assembly's total effective length. That length is what sets your front toe angle — how much the wheels point in or out. Count the exact number of turns as you remove the old part, then thread the new one on the same number of turns, and you get the toe angle back to roughly where it started.
This is not a substitute for a proper wheel alignment. Every source that addressed this was explicit: counting threads gets you close enough to drive safely to an alignment shop — it does not replace having the alignment actually checked and set. Treat it as a bridge to the alignment appointment, not a way to skip it.
Torque specs: there's no universal number
General reference ranges exist, but they're wide because real vehicle-to-vehicle variation is wide:

To see how much this actually varies by vehicle, compare two real factory service manual specs: a 2006 Dodge Dakota 4WD calls for 75 N·m (about 55 ft-lbs) on both the ball-stud nut and jam nut. A Tesla Model S calls for 103 N·m on the ball-stud nut and 70 N·m on the jam nut. Neither vehicle sits at the midpoint of the "general reference range" above, and the two vehicles don't match each other either. Look up your specific vehicle's factory torque spec — don't use a number from an article like this one as your target.
The castle nut rule that overrides everything else
If you're using a castle nut and it reaches spec torque without the slots lining up with the cotter pin hole, keep tightening until they align — never back the nut off to make them fit. Backing off drops clamping force below what the joint needs. This rule shows up consistently across manufacturer instructions and independent how-to sources alike; it's not a minor detail, it's the one step most likely to get skipped by someone in a hurry.
