Do All Four Wheels Have Tie Rods?

No. Front wheels almost always have tie rods — every rack-and-pinion or recirculating-ball steering system uses them to turn the front wheels. What's on the rear axle depends entirely on your suspension design, and that's where the confusion usually starts.

Four rear-axle scenarios

Rear axle typeHas tie rods? What's actually there
Standard (non-steering) rear suspensionNoControl arms and/or trailing arms hold the wheel in position — nothing steers back there
Independent rear suspension (IRS)Sort ofA toe link sets and holds rear toe angle. It's functionally similar to a tie rod and often gets called a "rear tie rod" colloquially, but it's not part of a steering system
Four-wheel steering (4WS/AWS)Yes, genuinelyReal rear steering tie rods, driven by an electric actuator — found on some performance cars, luxury sedans, and select trucks. Uncommon.
Solid/live rear axleNoThe axle housing is rigid; side-to-side positioning comes from a Panhard bar (track bar) or the leaf springs themselves, not a tie rod

The term confusion worth clearing up

If a shop tells you that you need "rear tie rods," on most vehicles they almost certainly mean the toe link on an independent rear suspension — a part that adjusts rear toe angle, not one that steers the wheel. It's a fair colloquial shorthand (both parts are threaded rods with ball joints that set an angle), but it's not the same system as front-wheel steering. True rear steering tie rods — the kind that actually turn the rear wheels — are rare enough that if your vehicle has them, you'd generally already know it's a four-wheel-steering model.

If you're not sure which of the four scenarios above applies to your vehicle, that's worth confirming before you buy a part — "rear tie rod" isn't a specific enough part description to shop from.
