What Connects to the Steering Knuckle? A Full Breakdown

The steering knuckle is a junction point — five different vehicle systems bolt onto it, and which parts exactly depends on your suspension design. Here's the full list, organized by which connections every vehicle has and which ones vary.

Always present, regardless of suspension type

  • Outer tie rod end — connects to the knuckle's steering arm; this is what actually pivots the knuckle when you turn the wheel.
  • Lower ball joint — connects the lower control arm to the knuckle, letting it pivot side to side while the suspension moves up and down.
  • Wheel hub and bearing assembly — mounts into the knuckle's center bore; your wheel bolts to this.
  • Brake caliper bracket — bolted directly to the knuckle so the caliper stays aligned with the rotor as the wheel steers.

Depends on your suspension design

This is the part most generic explainer pages skip — how the top of the knuckle connects depends entirely on suspension type, and treating it as one universal connection is wrong:

Get this wrong and you're describing the wrong vehicle architecture — a strut car doesn't have an "upper ball joint" in the way a double-wishbone truck does.

Depends on drivetrain and equipment

  • CV axle / driveshaft — on front-wheel-drive and AWD/4WD vehicles, the outer axle shaft passes through the hub/knuckle assembly to drive the wheel. Rear-drive vehicles with a solid front axle typically don't have this.
  • ABS wheel speed sensor — mounts near the hub/knuckle on vehicles equipped with it, reading rotation off a tone ring.
  • Sway bar link — on some vehicles, the sway bar link mounts directly to a point on the knuckle rather than the control arm. This one is worth flagging as a single-source detail rather than a universal design — it's not consistently confirmed across every source, so check your specific vehicle rather than assuming.

Steering path: steering wheel → steering rack → tie rod → knuckle (this is what turns it) Suspension path: control arm or strut → ball joint → knuckle (this is what lets it move up and down while turning)
