A steering knuckle — also called an upright, spindle, or hub carrier — is the pivot point where your wheel, suspension, steering, and brakes all bolt together. It's a heavy, load-bearing casting or forging sitting right behind each front wheel, and it's what actually turns when you turn the steering wheel: the tie rod pushes or pulls it, and the wheel hub bolted to it turns with it.
What it's made of, and why
Steering knuckles are forged steel, ductile iron, or (on some lighter/performance vehicles) aluminum — materials chosen because the part has to survive vehicle weight, steering loads, and braking forces simultaneously, at the same spot, for the life of the vehicle. That combined-load requirement is why it's not a stamped or welded part on virtually any production vehicle.
What connects to it, briefly
At minimum, a steering knuckle carries the wheel hub/bearing, the outer tie rod end, and (depending on suspension type) a ball joint or strut for the suspension connection, plus the brake caliper mount. Two basic designs
- Spindle-type knuckle — has an integrated spindle shaft where the wheel bearings sit directly on the stem. Common on older or rear-wheel-drive vehicle designs.
- Hub-mounted knuckle — has a bore designed for a bolt-on or press-in hub assembly. This is the standard on modern vehicles.
Why it rarely fails — and what does bend it
Because knuckles are built from forged steel or ductile iron to handle sustained fatigue loading, they're not prone to breaking under normal driving. What actually damages one is impact — hitting a deep pothole or curb hard enough to bend the casting. When that happens, the signs are consistent: an alignment that won't come back into spec (especially camber or caster, since the geometry itself is now physically wrong), uneven or accelerated tire wear, the vehicle pulling to one side, or a squeal/clunk when turning.
That's a distinction worth keeping straight: a worn tie rod end gives you gradual, wear-related symptoms. A bent knuckle is sudden, impact-related, and an alignment shop generally can't correct it with adjustment — the part itself is out of spec.
