How to Grease a Ball Joint Without a Fitting

A ball joint with no grease (zerk) fitting is almost always a sealed, factory-lubricated design meant to run maintenance-free for its service life — it's not that someone forgot to add one. If it's still quiet and the boot is intact, leave it alone; there's nothing to service. If it's started creaking or feeling dry, the practical workaround is a needle adapter on a hand grease gun, injected through the edge of the boot. It's a stopgap that can extend the joint's life, not a permanent fix.

First: Should You Even Do This?

Sealed ball joints ship with enough grease from the factory to (in theory) last the joint's whole working life. Puncturing an intact boot to add more grease isn't free — it creates a hole that has to be sealed afterward, and it's not the manufacturer-intended way to service the part. Reserve this method for a joint that's already showing dryness (steering creak, especially at low speed) rather than doing it preemptively on a joint that's behaving fine.

What You'll Need

  • Hand grease gun (skip powered guns here — you want to feel resistance building, not blow past it)
  • Grease needle adapter that fits your gun's coupler
  • NLGI #2 heavy-duty lithium or synthetic chassis grease
  • Degreaser and a rag
  • Silicone sealant or a small patch of weatherstrip adhesive, for afterward

Step by Step

  1. Clean the boot and surrounding area with degreaser. Any grit on the rubber gets pushed inside with the needle otherwise.
  2. Attach the needle adapter to the grease gun coupler, tightened fully — a loose fit lets grease ooze out at the connection instead of going into the joint.
  3. Insert the needle near the base of the boot, where the rubber meets the metal housing — not straight down through the middle of the boot. A shallow, angled entry near the edge is easier to seal afterward and less likely to damage the boot's sealing surface.
  4. Pump slowly, watching the boot. A few pumps is usually all it takes — stop the moment you see it start to swell. This is the same stopping signal used for greaseable joints; a sealed joint doesn't behave differently once grease is going in.
  5. Withdraw the needle and wipe away any excess grease.
  6. Seal the puncture. A small dab of silicone sealant or a patch of weatherstrip adhesive over the entry point keeps water and road grit from following the same path back in. Skipping this step defeats the purpose of the exercise — an unsealed puncture is now a worse entry point than the joint had before you started.

Should You Drill and Tap for a Permanent Fitting?

Some aftermarket guidance suggests drilling and tapping the top cap of the joint (commonly 1/4"-28 or M6x1.0 threads) to install a real zerk fitting permanently. Treat this as the more aggressive option: most sources in this space recommend against drilling into a load-bearing structural part unless you've confirmed the housing has enough wall thickness to take a threaded hole safely, and getting that wrong compromises a safety-critical component. If you're not certain, the needle method is the lower-risk route.

This Buys Time — It Doesn't Fix Wear

Regreasing a dry, sealed joint can quiet it down and slow further wear, but it doesn't reverse play that's already developed. If the joint has noticeable movement when checked (not just noise), grease isn't the answer — replacement is. Treat this method as extending the runway to a planned replacement, not as a substitute for one.
