For a routine maintenance top-off, the answer isn't a fixed number — it's a signal you watch for: stop pumping as soon as the rubber dust boot starts to swell or feel firm. On a standard hand grease gun, that typically works out to somewhere around 2–4 pumps, but the exact count depends on the joint's size and how much grease your gun dispenses per stroke. Pump count is a rough guide; the boot is the actual gauge.
Why "How Many Pumps" Is the Wrong Question to Fix On
Ball joints don't hold much internal volume, and that volume varies by joint design, vehicle, and manufacturer. A number that's correct for one joint can overfill another. MOOG's own technical bulletin on greasing steering and suspension parts doesn't give a pump count at all — it tells you to "fill the assembly until the boot starts to swell but don't overfill the boot." The Two Stopping Signals, Depending on the Design
Not every greaseable ball joint behaves the same way once you start pumping. There are two designs, and they call for two different stopping points:

An over-greased one can rupture or pop the boot off its seat — and once that seal is broken, water and road grit get a direct path into the joint, which accelerates wear far faster than being a little light on grease ever would. If you're not sure whether you've hit the stopping point, stop a pump or two early rather than push past it. There's no fixing a torn boot with more grease.
What Grease to Use
MOOG's engineers specify a premium heavy-duty NLGI #2 lithium or synthetic grease for greaseable chassis parts, ball joints included. That's a widely cited baseline across the industry — if your ball joint manufacturer specifies something different for a particular part, follow that instead, but NLGI #2 lithium/synthetic is the safe default when no other spec is given.
Before You Start
Check the boot for tears or splits before you grease anything. A torn boot has likely already let contamination in, and pumping grease into a compromised joint doesn't undo that — it's a sign the joint may need replacing rather than servicing. Wipe the grease fitting clean before attaching the gun, too; grit sitting on the fitting gets pushed straight into the joint on your first pump otherwise.
