How Do You Test or Check If a Sway Bar Link Is Bad?

A bad sway bar link almost always announces itself with a clunk or knock over bumps, plus a looser feeling in corners. To confirm it rather than guess, the reliable test is a hands-on one: get both wheels on the same axle off the ground, then grab the link and check for play by hand. Here's how to do it properly — including the one step most guides skip that can give you a false "it's fine" reading.

Symptoms to Check First

Before you get under the car, these are the signs worth paying attention to:

  • Clunking, knocking, or rattling from one corner, most noticeable over small, sharp bumps and uneven pavement.
  • More body roll than usual when cornering.
  • A slightly loose or unsettled feeling during quick lane changes or steering corrections.

One important caveat, consistent across sources: don't assume it's automatically the sway bar link. Tie rod ends, ball joints, control arm bushings, and strut mounts can all produce a similar clunk. The steps below are how you confirm it's actually the link — not just where the symptom is pointing.

Step 1: Raise the Vehicle — Both Wheels on the Axle, Not Just One

Chock the wheels, set the parking brake, then jack up the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands — never rely on the jack alone.

This is the step that gets skipped and causes false negatives: both wheels on the same axle need to be off the ground together (or both left on the ground together). If you only lift one side, the sway bar is still under torsional tension from the side that's still loaded — that tension pulls the link taut and can make a genuinely worn link feel tight and pass the test when it shouldn't. Lifting both sides at once relaxes the sway bar so any real play in the link shows up.

Step 2: Visual Inspection

With the wheel off (or the underside accessible), locate the link connecting the sway bar to the strut, control arm, or steering knuckle, and look for:

  • Torn or cracked rubber/dust boots (ball-joint-style links) — a torn boot lets grease escape and dirt/water in, which accelerates wear from that point on.
  • Cracked, split, or missing bushings (bolt/bushing-style links).
  • Rust, bending, or an obviously loose nut.

Step 3: The Hand Wiggle Test

Grab the link's body firmly and push/pull it in multiple directions — up-down, front-back.

  • Good: firm resistance, little to no perceptible movement (rotational movement in a ball joint's normal range of motion is expected and fine).
  • Bad: any noticeable in-and-out play, clicking, or knocking when you move it.

Compare side to side if you can — if one link has clearly more play than its counterpart on the other side, that's your answer.

Step 4 (Optional, More Thorough): Pry Bar Leverage Test

For a more sensitive check than hand pressure alone, place a small pry bar or large flathead screwdriver between the link's joint and its mounting point and apply gentle leverage. If you can see the stud shift inside its socket before the suspension itself moves, the joint is worn.

Cross-Check Against Look-Alike Noises

Before you commit to "it's the sway bar link," rule out the usual suspects that produce a similar clunk:
