No — replacing sway bar links alone doesn't require a wheel alignment. The link's only job is transmitting anti-roll force between the sway bar and the suspension; it doesn't set camber, caster, or toe. Those angles are controlled by the tie rods, control arms, and struts — different parts entirely. You only need an alignment if the repair also touched one of those.
Why the Link Doesn't Touch Your Alignment
A sway bar link connects the sway bar (also called a stabilizer bar or anti-roll bar) to a suspension component — usually the control arm or the strut. When the chassis rolls in a corner, the sway bar twists and the link transfers that resistance from the loaded outside wheel to the unloaded inside wheel, keeping the body flatter. That's the entire job: managing dynamic body roll during cornering.
What it doesn't do is hold the wheel in a fixed position relative to the chassis. Alignment is defined by three angles — camber (inward/outward tilt), caster (forward/rearward tilt of the steering axis), and toe (how much the wheels point in or out relative to each other) — and none of them are set by the sway bar link:

Swap the link for one of the correct length and you've restored factory body-roll resistance — nothing about the wheel's static geometry changed.
When You Actually Do Need One
The link itself is off the hook, but the repair around it might not be. Get an alignment if any of these apply:
- You also replaced or loosened a geometry-critical part — tie rod ends, control arms, ball joints, or struts. These directly set toe, camber, or caster, so touching them means an alignment isn't optional.
- Your vehicle required unbolting the strut's lower mount to access the link. On some platforms, the sway bar link isn't reachable without loosening the strut-to-knuckle bolts first — and disturbing that joint can shift camber or toe even though the link itself never touched alignment geometry. This is the one case that gets missed: the job looks like "just a link" but the access path involved an alignment-relevant fastener.
- The vehicle already had a symptom before the repair — pulling to one side, an off-center steering wheel, or uneven/feathered tire wear. Replacing the link won't fix a pre-existing alignment problem; that needs its own diagnosis regardless of what suspension work you just did.
Quick Check After the Job
Before deciding whether to book an alignment, do a low-cost sanity check:
- Is the clunk gone? That confirms the link fixed what it was supposed to fix.
- Does it track straight? On a flat, empty road, briefly ease off the wheel (don't let go entirely) and see if the car pulls to either side. If it drives straight, your alignment is intact.
If both check out and nothing in the "when you actually need one" list applies, you can skip the alignment appointment.
