The lower ball joint wears out first on most vehicles, because it's the one carrying the vehicle's weight. The upper ball joint (where a vehicle has one) mainly guides steering geometry and sees far less load, so it typically lasts longer. But before you go checking "upper vs. lower," it's worth confirming your vehicle actually has both — a lot of modern cars don't.
Not Every Vehicle Has an Upper Ball Joint
This is the step most comparisons skip. Vehicles with MacPherson strut front suspension — most modern sedans, hatchbacks, and car-based crossovers (Civic, Corolla, Camry, CR-V, RAV4, and similar) — have only a lower ball joint. The strut itself is bolted rigidly to the top of the steering knuckle and does the job an upper control arm and ball joint would otherwise do.
Vehicles with double-wishbone or short-long-arm (SLA) suspension — most trucks, body-on-frame SUVs, and some performance cars — have both an upper and a lower ball joint per side, each connecting its own control arm to the steering knuckle.
If you're not sure which setup you have, that's the first thing to check before diagnosing "which ball joint is bad" — on a strut car, there's only one candidate.
Why the Lower Joint Wears First

The mechanism is straightforward: the lower joint sits under continuous compressive load from the vehicle's own weight, plus every impact from the road surface. The upper joint, where one exists, mostly pivots to control the wheel's camber angle during steering and suspension travel — it isn't holding the car up. Telling Them Apart by Symptom
Because the two joints do different jobs, they tend to fail with somewhat different symptoms — though there's real overlap, so don't rely on symptom alone to diagnose which one it is without a physical check.
Signs pointing toward a bad lower ball joint:
- A dull, heavy clunk or knock over bumps and potholes (not a sharp click)
- Noticeable play when the tire is rocked at the 12-and-6 o'clock positions with the wheel off the ground
- Uneven wear on the inner tread edge
- In advanced cases, visible sagging at that corner, or the wheel leaning inward at the top
Signs pointing toward a bad upper ball joint (strut-suspension vehicles usually don't have this joint at all):
- A sharper popping or clicking noise, most noticeable during low-speed turns rather than over bumps
- Steering wheel that's slow to return to center after a turn, or doesn't fully self-center
- Uneven wear on the outer tread edge
- Camber alignment that keeps drifting out of spec even after a fresh alignment
Symptoms that don't tell you which one it is: uneven tire wear in general, steering-wheel vibration, and a vague/loose steering feel can show up with either joint worn, so treat these as "something's worn" rather than "it's definitely the upper" or "it's definitely the lower."

Symptom pattern gets you a strong guess; a physical check confirms it.
