Moog's own suspension-parts resource page is more conservative, citing "up to 100k miles" before replacement becomes likely. Neither number is a manufacturer-mandated interval — no OEM publishes "replace ball joints at X miles" the way they publish oil-change intervals, because ball joint wear tracks road conditions and load far more than time or mileage alone. Treat this range as a planning reference, not a countdown.
What pushes a given joint toward the low end or the high end of that range:
- Road conditions — potholes, unpaved roads, and general rough-road driving accelerate wear.
- Load and towing — regularly hauling or towing near a vehicle's rated capacity puts more stress on the joint with every cycle.
- Boot integrity — this is the variable that matters most. A torn dust boot lets water and grit into the joint, and once that happens, wear accelerates fast regardless of mileage. Older greaseable joints can have their service life extended through regular maintenance; modern sealed joints have no such option — once the boot fails and the factory grease is contaminated, the clock starts running.
- Maintenance — on greaseable joints, staying on top of grease intervals meaningfully extends service life. Sealed joints don't offer this lever at all.
Urgency Depends on Condition, Not Odometer

The reason urgency matters more than most wear items is what happens if a joint goes from "worn" to "separated" without warning: the wheel can fold or, less commonly, come off the car entirely, and either outcome typically happens at speed, not while parked.
