What is a cv axle and how does it work?

The constant velocity(CV) axle transmits the power of the differential to the wheels to drive the wheels. Its outside is splined to the hub bearing of the wheel and the inside is splined to the differential gear.

The cv axle components

CV axle consists bell shape housing, shaft, inner race cage, balls, tripod joint, ball case, needle rollers, dustproof boots and clamp.

2 common cv joints types of cv axles

The cv joint is a key component of the cv axle. There are 2 most common types of cv joints, one is called “Rzeppa Joint”and the other one is called “Tripod Joint”. The difference between the 2 joints are configurations of cages and balls, position and function. The “Rzeppa Joint” consists of bell shap housing, cage, race, balls, circlip and precision machined spline. It can be designed at either end of the cv axles and used as a plunge cv joint or a fixed cv joint to connect the differential and wheel for extending and rotation. The “Tripod Joint”consists of housing, circlip, roller, spider and spacer, it’s a kind of plunging cv joint. As it is only designed at inner end to connect differential, it is also called inboard joint.
